• Wingnut vs. Ergon

So, the other day I was asked the following questions in my "Mind Blowing" post...

"How does it compare to the Wingnut? I've got a Hyper 2.5 that is nice with the wrap around pockets. Does the Ergon have them as well? It's hard to tell from the pictures. it looks like the Ergon pack sits higher as well."

How does the new Ergon pack compare to the Wingnut? Well, they are very similar in function. Both packs sit in ways that allow the rider to be more comfortable over the long haul. Both have the same carrying capacity, and both are
    very, very well made.

Each pack has its highlight features. The Wingnut is super light, and has easy access to the pockets while riding. The Ergon pack, has well design joint system to allow freedom of movement, stratigically placed contact points on the body to minimize rider fatigue, and also allows access to the riders jersey pockets.

I have ridden with both of these packs. The Wingnut has been in my possession since May, and the Ergon pack was demoed for about 3 hours a month ago while in Germany. I am not going to say one is better than the other....cause they aren't. It ultimately comes down to right tool for the job. The Wingnut I feel serves a good usage for the lap racer, or the rider who wants something light and with minimal storage for the 50-80 mile event. While, on the flip-side, the Ergon pack has all-day geometry for those that like to do all day rides in the mountains, carry a lot of weight, or are competing in an event like Trans-Rockies or Trans-Alps were you are required to carry certain gear with you at all times.

While riding with the Ergon pack, I did come to the conclusion that the more weight you had in the pack the better it worked. I could totally see the Ergon pack doing a good duty at GDR or CTR. Other noted items between the packs was the shoulder & waist straps. While the Wingnut uses a mesh shoulder strap and a strap belt....the Ergon goes almost expedition style and gives you a fully padded system for more comfort...which, oddly enough, breathes just as well.

There will be more to come on the Ergon pack as it debuts in 2007. Keep an open mind, and choose the right weapon. I feel the Ergon pack is going to change the way we look at packs. It's that radical!
